14 DAY TRIAL // Barbadian singer Rihanna was honored with the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDAs 2014, held the other night in New York City and, to make sure her appearance would be one we’d be talking about for days to come, she wore a dress made of thousands of Swarovski crystals, which went completely see-through when she stepped on the red carpet.
To date, this is Rihanna’s most daring outfit ever because, when the flashes of the cameras went off, she was left practically naked. She usually goes either for a classic look or for the shock factor: this Swarovski dress was the latter taken to the maximum.
However, she didn’t let the fact that she was wearing close to nothing or that she was decked from head to toe in precious gems prevent her from having a great time. This video posted on Instagram shows her twerking backstage at the fashion event.
It came captioned with “The way we celebrate after a beautiful night or should I say the second half of a beautiful night #cdfaicon.” Because Rihanna was wearing that revealing dress and because she was getting her twerk on, we obviously can’t show you the video here, but you can find it at the link in the paragraph above. *Proceed with caution though.
Back to Rihanna’s dress, we found out yesterday that it was custom made for her by designer Adam Selman and comprised a total of 216,000 Swarovski crystals. She wore a matching headpiece and over-the-elbow gloves, but we assume the gems on these are not included in the tally.
The dress was backless and, in natural sunlight, looked like any other red carpet designer gown – which is to say, not in the least see-through. However, when she stepped on the red carpet to pose for photographers, they had the surprise of their life when they got to see every inch of the star’s body.
The only items that still protected her modesty were a fur stole (which she later removed for a better view) and a pair of skin-colored thongs.
At the event, Zac Posen spoke about Rihanna getting the Fashion Icon Award, saying she was the embodiment of true style because she was not afraid to take risks. Well, now that we’ve seen this dress, we know for a fact Rihanna is anything but “afraid.”
“She takes risks and she marches to her own drum and she knows what she likes. It's been an incredible journey. [When we met] She was a fashion world novice, but obviously she had looks and confidence and little-girl charm. All the ingredients were there for her to be a huge superstar: ambition, strength, and also vulnerability,” Posen said.
