“Rated R” helped her get ready for a new stage in life

The latest issue of W Magazine brings one of the hottest photospreads from Rihanna to date. Dressed in complicated designs from Michael Kors or in only a black tutu, the singer sizzles for the camera, while also putting on display her impressive collection of tattoos. The same issue also brings an honest and open interview on anything from her fashion style to how the abuse left her traumatized, and the therapeutic powers of the “Rated R” album.

As fans must surely know by now, in February last year, Rihanna and then-boyfriend Chris Brown got into an altercation that eventually pushed Brown over the edge, becoming very violent towards her. He beat up Rihanna very bad and then left before the cops even got on the scene, but that was not the most difficult moment for the singer. What followed next was even harder, as she had to face the reality of having been in an abusive relationship and come to terms with life as it was.

Luckily, getting started on “Rated R,” her latest album, helped her get through this difficult time. “When I was making this album, every day I was in a different mood. Sometimes I was [expletive] off, sometimes I was miserable, and every song brings out a different story. It’s still hard to listen to certain songs. Certain ones I couldn’t even record – I’d keep pushing them back,” the singer tells W.

Eventually, she was forced to man up and finish what she’d started: and that meant recording “The Last Song,” a track about having to part with a loved one for good. “When the label finally said we had 12 hours to turn in the album, I was like, Okay, I have to do it (record ‘The Last Song’). I just drank some red wine, dimmed the lights, got in the booth and sang it,” Rihanna goes on to explain. Thanks to all this and finally getting to see “Rated R” out, she’s now freer and ready to start everything all over again.

Music is not the only topic that Rihanna touches upon in the W interview, as she also talks about her love for dressing up, her unmistakable style and how she always avoids the “girlie” image, and what she’d do if she had the option to choose between fame and anonymity. She never dreams about being back home in Barbados, the star says, because she knows for a fact she’d be dreaming about fame and fortune if she were there right now.
