Rihanna’s everyday style is, most often than not, a hit and miss because she tends to break way too many rules at once and the effect is overwhelming. However, when she’s on the red carpet, taking risks pays off for her, so that she can work any design and / or style, look fabulous, but still stay true to her style.

The same happened at the MET Gala 2014. The event, described as the fashion industry’s biggest night or the “Oscars of fashion,” took place in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and saw a spectacular turnout of both celebrities and industry people.

Rihanna, who has been featured on multiple Vogue covers throughout the years (which is relevant because Anna Wintour of Vogue is involved in every edition of the MET Ball), could not have missed it. She made sure she got plenty of attention during her short time on the red carpet.

As you can see from the photo above, she deserved it. The singer, who walked the red carpet alone, leaving supposed beau Drake at home, wore a white Stella McCartney design that consisted of a cropped top with long sleeves that exposed her toned abs and most of her back, and a long skirt that ended with a trail.

You probably can’t imagine how a cropped top would ever be high fashion but there are a handful of women who can – and do – make it work like this. Rihanna is among them, as also are Leslie Mann or Emma Stone, to cite just two of the actresses who wore one such item on the red carpet most recently.

Rihanna accessorized with Jacob & Co. and Dionea Orcini jewelry, including a large silver choker that made her white outfit stand out. When she turned her back to the cameras, she revealed that the cropped top was actually backless. Meanwhile, the skirt was gathered on one side, which flattered her famous figure.

To allow the outfit to take center stage, Rihanna opted for a very cute updo and small diamond earrings. Her tattoos were also on full display which, depending on who you ask, is either a bad thing or a very daring one.

Rihanna wasn’t the only celebrity to wear white at the MET Ball, which, this year, celebrated the opening of the Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibit; but she was definitely the one who caused the most oohs and aahs.
