Video game developer and publisher Trion Worlds has announced that on Valentine’s Day this year the company will try to get a World Record from Guinness for the biggest amount of virtual marriages that are registered in a 24-hour period, using the MMO Rift as the venue for all the knot tying.

Scott Hartsman, the executive producer working on Rift and CCO at Trion, stated, “MMOs are the most fun when you’re playing with friends and loved ones.”

He added, “Whether exploring Telara and adventuring with your significant other, or meeting up with geographically distant friends in a virtual pub, the MMO experience is about bringing people together, and our new weddings and gatherings exemplify this philosophy.

“We think the Valentine’s Day record attempt is a unique way for players to celebrate Rift’s spirit of camaraderie while making real-world history.”

The record attempt is set to begin at 9 AM Pacific Standard Time on February 14 of this year and will run until the same moment during the next day.

The marriage functionality will be included in Rift via the 1.7 update, which will be launched towards the beginning of February.

Gamers who take part in the MMO and are interested in marrying one another will need to get to a special vendor in the capital city and then purchase a ring that will then be offered to their partner as a symbol of their new bond.

The MMO also includes wedding events, which can include up to 200 friends and scripted ceremonies.

In Rift any two gamers can marry each other, with no limitations linked to sex or to race, but the developers have said that gamers who play on opposite factions will be unable to declare their love for each other.

Each character that gets a wedding on February 14 will get a special Tier of Knots in-game title for his effort.
