A suspect was killed by police after going on a shooting spree in the small town of Ridgecrest in Central California on Friday.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood mentions that the police chased the suspect after he called them himself.

39-year-old Sergio Munoz killed a woman and injured another man before embarking on a police chase which he set off.

Munoz broke into a couple's small home and attacked them. He had been staying in their house.

Authorities were called in after "multiple gunshot wounds" were reported at the residence on 500 block of West Atkins Avenue.

A Kern County sheriff's deputy officer spotted the vehicle of the suspect as he was leaving town, about two hours later.

According to Los Angeles Times, police started chasing the man south on Highway 395. He opened fire and had a shotgun and handgun on him. At least ten to twelve bullets were fired.

He called 911 and told the dispatchers that he intended to "kill all the officers but they had too many guns." He added that he wanted to "wreak havoc" instead. No injuries were reported but several vehicles were driven off the highway.

"Everyone is very shook up and concerned in Ridgecrest. [...] This is a small town and things like this just don’t happen here," Mayor Dan Clark expresses.

"This type of thing is very alarming," Youngblood adds.

During the chase, Munoz pulled over and opened the trunk, showing officers that he was holding two people hostage. Their identities have not been revealed at this point.

Before heading north of Highway 58, he pulled over a second time and started shooting at the trunk through his backseat.

Seven police officers fired at the suspect and fatally shot him. The hostages survived the attack with gunshot wounds, and they were airlifted to local clinics.

Police were investigating "several different crime scenes" after the incident.
