In late October, a bunch of animal rights activists rescued about 200 beagles from a laboratory in Brazil. It turns out researchers in this country aren't the only ones who carry out cruel experiments on such pooches. On the contrary, the practice is also widespread in Great Britain.

Comedian Ricky Gervais has taken it upon himself to raise awareness of this issue, and has asked fans and Facebook friends to sing an online petition demanding that the country's high officials do not give the green light to plans to set up a beagles breeding facility in Yorkshire.

What upsets the comedian is the fact that the beagles born and raised at this facility will be used for research purposes, Ecorazzi tells us.

“Please sign this petition to prevent Beagles being bred for research in Yorkshire,” the petition reads.

Furthermore, “The most recent annual Home Office statistics report that 3,214 dogs suffered in 4,843 tests in Great Britain in 2012. This is a 6% increase in the number of dogs used compared to the previous year (2,865 in 2011), and a rise of 12% in the number of experiments carried out (4,552 in 2011). 3,595 experiments were conducted on dogs that had been specifically bred in the UK for experiments.”

Head over to Change.org if you want to sign the petition and help put an end to animal testing.
