This December 23, green group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) announced that it had decided to name Ricky Gervais its 2013 Person of the Year.

Comedian Ricky Gervais is a fierce defender of animal rights, and has many times spoken against practices such as testing various cosmetics and drugs on defenseless pooches, rabbits and the like.

What's more, the comedian more often than not resorts to Twitter to share his thoughts on cruelty towards animals.

Given the fact that he has some 5.3 million followers, there is little doubt that he has the power to really make a difference.

As the comedian himself explained in an interview with JustGiving, “I probably do no more than anyone else on Twitter, but I can get my message to an awful lot of people at once, and if you’re passionate about something that has touched your heart, chances are it will touch many other people’s hearts in the same way.”

Thus, in 2013 alone, Ricky Gervais' Twitter posts concerning the need to put an end to animal cruelty were retweeted over 83,000 times.
