Ricky Gervais has teamed up with BUAV (the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) and is now asking that the UK government outlaw the practice of carrying out experiments on cats and dogs as soon as possible.

The comedian pleas that his fans and people who keep animals close at heart also offer their support to BUAV's Our Best Friends campaign, and sign a petition demanding that these animals no longer be used for research purposes.

“Cats share our homes, they are loving, loyal and playful and they deserve a safe and happy life, not one of suffering,” Ricky Gervais said in a statement, as cited by Ecorazzi.

“That’s why I am supporting the Our Best Friends campaign, taking action to bring a stop to the suffering of cats and dogs in UK laboratories,” he added.

According to BUAV, a reported 3,214 dogs and 202 cats were experimented on by researchers in Great Britain in the year 2012 alone, despite the fact that these animals are people's most popular companions.

Those wishing to help ban experiments on cats and dogs in the UK can do so by signing the BUAV'S Our Best Friends petition.
