There are people out there who can probably recite every line of the iconic film “Pretty Woman,” but leading man Richard Gere is not among them. In a recent interview, the actor trashes the romantic comedy, calling it “silly,” a trifle.

Granted, there are cases in which actors end up ashamed of having chosen to do one project or another, but, until now, Gere never showed any signs of being one of them.

However, he's not that impressed with “Pretty Woman,” which is considered, to this day, one of the best rom-coms ever made.

In fact, he claims to have forgotten everything about it already.

“People ask me about that movie but I’ve forgotten it. That was a silly romantic comedy,” he says in an interview with Woman's Day, cited by the Daily Mail.

He also believes his character, Edward Lewis, helped glorify and glamorize Wall Street types, which, he now understands, was a very wrong thing to do.

“It made those guys seem dashing, which was wrong. Thankfully, today, we are all more skeptical of those guys,” he says.

The reason Gere is stepping all over “Pretty Woman” is, it would seem, that he's promoting a new film, a financial drama called “Arbitrage.”

Now, here is a movie that should make an impact, he says.

“This is a much more serious move that has some real cause and effect,” Richard Gere explains.

In the same interview, he also talks about how, back in the day, relationships were all about “status” and how meeting his current partner of 15 years, Carey Lowell, has made him realize the money and fame in the world could not make up for the absence of love.

“She has given me a very clear conscience of what is right and wrong. I would rather be loved than have money and all that other stuff. I know now that I would rather have something that is true, something that is based on real love,” the star says.

Fans of “Pretty Woman” are deeply hurt by the fact that its leading man would turn on it like this.
