As of now, you have until October 16, when the “Wonderland Story” episode of NBC’s series “Law & Order: SVU” airs, to get used to the idea of not seeing Sergeant Munch on the job anymore. E! News confirms that Munch is retiring.

Richard Belzer, the actor who played the character in the series since it first aired, decided that it was time to say goodbye.

A rep for the network confirms the news but doesn’t offer more details into the reasons behind Belzer’s departure. He does say though that there will be a “retirement party.”

“A rep for SVU tells us that while there are no immediate plans for Belzer to return, his character's exit will definitely leave the door open for him to return to work with the SVU squad in the future,” E! News writes.

Ironically, last May, Belzer was asked if he ever considered leaving the show and he insisted it wouldn’t happen too soon because he was still not done with the character – and he was definitely not bored with it because of the excellent writing.

So, what could have happened to make him change his mind? What do you think?
