Recent news from South Africa says that, since the beginning of this year, a total of 688 rhinos have been killed and stripped of their horns in this part of the world.

In 2012, 548 such animals were slaughtered by poachers in South Africa. This means that, all things considered, poaching in these regions has pretty much reached record-breaking levels.

Metro tells us that, according to reports shared with the public by the World Wildlife Fund, it only took a few years for poaching in said areas to go through the roof.

Specifically, it appears that since 2007 until present day, the number of rhinos massacred for their horns on a yearly basis has upped by an impressive 5,000%.

Conservationists maintain that this increase is due to the fact that ever more people in South Asia are willing to purchase powdered rhino horn, and use it as a treatment for fever, headaches and hangovers.

Some even believe that rhino horns can treat more serious medical conditions such as cancer and impotence.
