Rumors that Mirror’s Edge 2 is under development at DICE and Electronic Arts regularly sprout on the Internet, but even if the game becomes real at some point, the original author of the story, the daughter of Terry Pratchett, is unlikely to be working on it.

Rhianna Pratchett, who is not currently known to work on any video game related projects, has told ActionRip that, “DICE was a great company to work with, but Mirror’s Edge was a challenging project and an important learning experience for me.

“Unfortunately, because of the timing when I was brought in and a large amount of the script being cut the narrative wasn’t what I would’ve liked it to be.”

The author believes that the accompanying comic book series, based on Mirror’s Edge that was created with DC Comics, allowed her to inject some more narrative into the game universe.

Pratchett added, “Game development is chaotic at the best of times and narrative often suffers. It’s no one’s fault. We’re all still learning. Stories being cut, restructured, pushed, pulled and generally poked about is one of the uncomfortable realities of the job.

“I’ve been quite candid about what happened with Mirror’s Edge, because I know some players were disappointed with the narrative in the game.”

The author has also talked about the recent ending controversy linked to Mass Effect 3, saying that she has not yet had a chance to play the game in order to talk about the actual writing.

Regardless of that, she believes that the BioWare-issued explanation that it tried to get the community talking was a poor excuse.

The first Mirror’s Edge video game was innovative because it created a universe where motion was the only real weapon for the main character.

Critics praised the game but sales were disappointing, with Electronic Arts suggesting that the game lacked the potential to spawn a franchise.
