The Linēa-pro 4 from Infinite Peripherals is aiming to revolutionize retail store checkout by serving sales associates with a mobile point-of-sale (POS) device. Their solution is now available for the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4th generation, hoping to further eliminate the need for customers to wait in line.

Comprised of a two-piece plastic shell that attaches to the iPod via the 30-pin connector, each Linēa-pro functions using third-party software that runs on the unit.

Whether or not the iDevice needs to be jailbroken is not specified.

Data can be stored locally or transmitted via a Wi-Fi or cellular network.

The Linēa-pro 4 comes with a Bluetooth option to connect to a portable receipt printer as well.

The makers believe the Linēa-pro maximizes the functionality and convenience of Apple’s devices.

They claim to have been told by retailers that handheld systems optimize efficiency by increasing customer conversion rates and freeing up floor space.

First introduced in November 2009, the original Linēa-pro was compatible only with the 2nd and 3rd generations of the iPod touch.

Now, the solution comes in six versions:

- iPod touch 4th generation with 1D barcode scanner - iPod touch 4th generation with 2D barcode scanner - iPod touch 4th generation with three-track card reader (no barcode scanner) - iPhone 4 with 1D barcode scanner - iPhone 4 with 2D barcode scanner - iPhone 4 with three-track card reader (no barcode scanner)

“The Linēa-pro helps bring the checkout lane or customer service desk directly to shoppers, instead of requiring them to spend time waiting in line for service – time that could be spent browsing and selecting additional merchandise for purchase,” said Andrew Graham, president of IPC.

“Purchasers really appreciate the time savings, along with the ‘no-hassle’ factor, which creates a huge perception shift of checkout,” added Graham.

The Linēa-pro doesn’t just do POS.

The solutions also interact with software written for other applications and industries, Infinite Peripherals said.

These include inventory management, asset tracking, ID verification, lead tracking, inspection/work flow, dispatch, time/labor and lab and healthcare.
