Revelations combines survival horror with action

Capcom sheds some light on what philosophy it now has for the Resident Evil series, saying that the future Resident Evil 7 will bring big ideas and innovation, and because Revelations 2 treads on similar ground as its predecessor, it's not necessary to use a full number on it.

Capcom's latest Resident Evil titles have been all over the place in terms of content, strategy, and design, alternating between action-oriented takes like Resident Evil 5 and more survival-oriented experiences, like Resident Evil: Revelations, and even reaching a mix of these elements with Resident Evil 6, which had three campaigns, each with its own feel.

The Japanese company confirmed earlier this year that it was going to roll out the next big entry in the franchise, in the form of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, disappointing a few fans that were anticipating Resident Evil 7.

The company explains why Revelations 2 isn't part of the main series

Now, in order to clarify things, Capcom Producer Michiteru Okabe has talked with IGN and explained that the big entries in the Resident Evil series need major innovations and features in order to justify their big number and their place in the main franchise.

Meanwhile, with the spinoffs like Revelations 2, Capcom can tread some already known ground, by delivering a survival horror experience reminiscent of the last Revelations and of the earlier titles in the main franchise.

"I think the big numbered titles are where we try the big sort of experiments, bold new things," Okabe says. "We see what sticks, and continue to refine those ideas. I think with the spin-off series we have the opportunity to do something a little different."

Revelations 2 blends the old and new Resident Evil titles

In terms of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Okabe believes that through its gameplay, the new title is going to offer a mix of the best elements from old games in the series and newer ones.

The producer believes that the "gameplay serves as a bridge to the more classically styled Resident Evils versus the new action-focused ones."

Because it won't be focused that much on action, like for example Resident Evil 6, Okabe believes that it can pull off survival horror on a smaller scale, threatening just the existence of the two main characters, Claire Redfield and Moira Burton.

Revelations 2 is set to debut in early 2014 and will be launched as a four-part episode series throughout a single month.
