Hackers have compromised the blogging platform of the world renowned news agency and posted a false story regarding the retreat of the Syrian Free Army.

“Reuters.com was a target of a hack on Friday,” read a message posted on Reuter’s official Twitter account.

“A false blog posting, purporting to carry an interview with the head of the Free Syrian Army Riad al-Assad was illegally posted on a Reuters journalists blog page on reuters.com on Friday.”

The Atlantic Wire caught a glimpse of the fake story which claimed that 1,000 soldiers of the Free Syrian Army were killed and 1,500 were arrested.

Although no hacker collective has taken credit for the breach, the main suspect in this case is the Syrian Electronic Army, a group known for pulling similar stunts.

Back in March, they hijacked the English Facebook account of Al Arabiya, posting fake stories about a dispute between the army controlled by the Syrian government and the Free Syria Army.
