Finnish developer Housemarque has announced the first DLC pack for their PlayStation 4 exclusive arcade shooter Resogun.

The game was part of the PlayStation 4's launch line-up and was universally praised for its skill-testing and engaging gameplay. And now, it's getting even better, with the upcoming Heroes DLC.

The game is a spiritual successor to the developer's previous side-scrolling shoot'em up games, Super Stardust, and was one of the two games offered for free to PlayStation Plus members who purchased the PlayStation 4 home entertainment system at release.

Although players do battles on multiple levels, all the action takes place on the outer perimeter of a cylinder, offering a fresh perspective on the traditional endless side-scrolling mechanic by allowing players to change direction and tackle a different section of the level, ending on the opposite side of their enemy.

The downloadable content pack will contain two new game modes as well as a new patch. Although the developer still intends to keep a lid on things for now, it has revealed that one of the modes is Survival, a twist which will put an entirely new spin on the entire experience.

Taking the original high-score chasing gameplay, with its fast-paced shooting, boosting and bombing, it amplifies the tension of the journey around the cylinder by only allowing players to have one life, and one life only.

The Survival Mode also changes the rules of the game, by challenging players to complete full in-game day/night cycles in order to progress, and the more a player completes, the higher his score becomes, at the cost of ever-mounting enemy resistance, of course.

Another rule change from the original experience is the fact that the little green humans will show up more often and that players will no longer need to pick them up and drop them off in order to score points. Humans will come equipped with parachutes to slow their descent from the top of the screen, and players will only have to grab them before they escape or perish.

In addition to the basic Resogun experience, the upcoming Heroes DLC will also come with a bunch of enhancements, such as new enemies to take down, new graphical nuances and fresh sound effects, new item icons and a new soundtrack. Also, new trophies.

The full details on the upcoming Resogun DLC pack, Heroes, are not out yet, but we'll keep our eyes open and report back when Housemarque announces anything new.
