Resistance 3, one of the most important upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive shooters, has just received its first multiplayer details and will also get an online beta later in the year.

Insomniac Games has been working hard on the third chapter of its Resistance first-person shooter series, and we already know quite a few details about the single-player campaign, which will see Joseph Capelli, a new protagonist, try to survive the waves of Chimera monsters in an alternate-reality 1950s USA.

Now, the multiplayer mode, a key part of the franchise, has seen its first details revealed at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

As opposed to the massive 40- and 60-player multiplayer modes from the first two Resistance games, the third iteration will take the maximum number of players down to just 16, divided into Human and Chimera teams.

While this may seem like a step down, Insomniac guarantees that it will result in better matches across more confined maps and that it has added all of the best parts from the multiplayer modes in the first and second Resistance games into the new title.

"Resistance 3 will offer a very deep and customizable progression system," said Insomniac’s James Stevenson, senior community manager. "Players can create their own progression paths through multiplayer, spending their hard-earned points to customize loadouts that fit their unique playstyle. We learned a lot from Resistance 2 co-op in terms of giving players the ability to create specific roles in a team and level up different abilities – which you will see with the various active tactical and support abilities, as well as the new personal and combat attributes."

These powers will range from boosts to shields or radars to Doppelganger, which will allow you to project an image of yourself to distract an enemy, or a power that, once you die, makes little leaper monsters spawn from your body.

"You will be able to truly customize your character loadout to fit your own unique playstyle in Resistance 3," Stevenson added.

The Resistance 3 multiplayer mode has been in the making for quite some time, but Insomniac also wants to hear feedback from the fans, so a multiplayer beta will arrive on the PlayStation Network later this year.

Resistance 3 is scheduled to appear exclusively for the PlayStation 3 on September 6, but until then you can check out the multiplayer screenshots below.
