Insomniac Games, together with Sony, have detailed the upcoming beta stage that they'll be running for Resistance 3, and how fans of the franchise will be able to try out some of the multiplayer options in the title ahead of its release in September.

Resistance 3 is the next installment in the retro sci-fi shooter series created by Insomniac Games and published by Sony, so the two companies want to amp up the hype before its release, exclusively on the PlayStation 3 console.

As such, a beta stage for the game's multiplayer mode will be held in August in order to showcase the new options included by Insomniac in the new title, as well as two of the new maps that will be available in the full game.

"The Resistance 3 Beta includes two of our major maps in the game, the Seaside of Glamorgan, Wales, as well as a Trainyard in Bogota, Colombia. The Public Beta includes two of our five multiplayer modes, Team Deathmatch and Chain Reaction (the other three are Deathmatch, Breach, and Capture the Flag)."

"You can level your character up, buy and upgrade weapons and abilities, customize your loadouts and unlock new character skins. We have capped the level in the beta at 20, so you won’t be able to get the full range of abilities, modes, maps, and weapons until the game launches in September, but we hope you enjoy this taste of the experience while helping us test our online infrastructure."

Getting into the Resistance 3 beta is a bit tricky, however, as it won't be a proper, open stage, like the recent one ran for Uncharted 3.

First up, on August 4, US residents who bought specially-marked SOCOM 4 copies will be able to redeem the code they found in the box on the PlayStation Store and download the beta client.

Next up, PlayStation Plus subscribers in Europe will be invited to join in on August 10, while North American Plus members can participate in the beta on August 23.

Other ways of getting into the Resistance 3 beta will be announced throughout the month of August, so fans that didn't buy SOCOM 4 or who don't have Plus memberships still have a chance.
