Capcom is set to take its Resident Evil franchise into new directions, and has just seen the first details appear about the all-new Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.
According to
Stickskills, the Official Xbox Magazine in the US has an exclusive cover story about the new game, which will be a departure from the classic survival horror titles that make up the long-running series.
Unlike other Resident Evil games, Operation Raccoon City will be a team-based shooter, allowing up to four players to take on the roles of USS soldiers sent out to destroy all of the evidence left after the destruction of Raccoon City.
Capcom is working together with Slant Six Games, the developer behind the recent SOCOM Confrontation, in order to ensure that players will have a great team experience.
The conflict will see the USS soldiers not only fight with the abominations and monsters left behind by the destruction of the city, but also go up against US Spec Ops members, who are there to counter their efforts.
The USS team is composed out of four characters, Vector, Beltway, Bertha and Spectre, each with their own tasks and talents, while the whole team is based on Hunk from Resident Evil 2.
Gameplay will be changed as opposed to previous titles in the series, with darker influences being added, while Slant Six wants to ensure a different experience each time you go through the game.
What's more, serious Resident Evil fans will be thrilled to hear that they can interact and quite possibly change the history of the franchise, as they'll meet other characters from the series, including Resident Evil 2 protagonist Leon Kennedy.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is scheduled to appear on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this winter, but expect more concrete details in the near future from Capcom.
The company is also set to debut two high definition remakes of
Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code: Veronica X this fall, which will be released as downloadable titles for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
