The first actual details about the recently announced Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City have been revealed by its publisher, Capcom.
Speaking with the French Official PlayStation Magazine, via
NeoGAF, the game's producer, Masachika Kawata, said that Operation Raccoon City will be a new direction for the series, which changed quite a lot since its early days on the original PlayStation.
"For us, it's about a new direction for RE. It's kind of a spin-off. That's why it doesn't have a number. It's not necessarily entirely in the canon, but it's totally immersed in the mythology.”
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a big departure from the regular franchise mechanics, as this time, the game is a true third-person shooter, with an emphasis on squad-based tactics, as opposed to earlier games which saw just the player, and sometimes a comrade, take on hordes of zombies or infected humans.
The move, according to Kawata, happened because it was a natural progression for the series, considering the last two titles, Resident Evil 4 and 5, but fans should rest assured that it will still feel as a Resident Evil game.
"As you know it's our fifteenth anniversary, which is a long time for a video game series... Some players came to the series when it made a turn towards action [in Resident Evil 4] (still with horror elements, though). This design led the series towards third-person shooter."
The game comes from a collaboration between Capcom and Canadian studio Slant Six Games, which previously worked on SOCOM: Confrontation, and, according to the producer, is filled with fans of Resident Evil games who have plenty of experience with third-person shooters.
In the end, Kawata says that even if Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a departure from franchise mechanics, "there are still tons of horror elements."
The game is set to appear this winter season, on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
