Capcom's Resident Evil franchise will be completely overhauled with the introduction of the next game, Resident Evil 6, at least according to Capcom producer Masachika Kawata, who talked about the next title.

Capcom has been releasing a hefty amount of details about its Resident Evil franchise, which is set to receive quite a lot of new titles this year and in 2012.

Among them, we won't find a full pledged sequel, as the Japanese company still hasn't revealed anything concrete about a possible Resident Evil 6.

This didn't stop Capcom producer Masachika Kawata from talking with a Spanish website, via RelyOnHorror, and saying that the next game will be a complete renovation of the whole franchise.

"The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level. But we can’t forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise," Kawata said.

He went on to say that while the new game will thoroughly overhaul the franchise up until now, many things haven't even been decided by the development team, so it's still too early to tell.

"I can’t say if we’re going to make it (Resident Evil 6) survival horror or a shooter, but I can say that it’ll be totally different."

While Resident Evil has been one of the first truly successful survival horror franchises, with the release of Resident Evil 5, the series has taken a turn to the regular third-person shooter genre, prompting many fans to express their disappointment.

The series is branching off even more in the next few months, as Capcom is getting ready to debut titles like Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS or Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, a squad-based shooter for consoles like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

I think Resident Evil 6 should bring back the zombies and the horror that was often used in RE 1, 2, and 3 such as monsters breaking through windows, scary sounds to create suspense, and other elements of surprise. The creating of ammo with gunpowder was pretty cool also. Bringing back the old characters such as Leon and Claire, and having the option of playing the game with either person to see different endings would awesome too, like in RE 2. I really how RE 5 had many weapons, but did not like that the characters were bigger during game time, since it took up a lot of space in the screen. I think the classic way, where different angles are used makes it look more like a movie and more fun to both watch and play. In my opinion though, I really enjoyed RE 4 because the story was good and long. I also like the setting of RE 4; the village and castle especially made the game scarier.

Anytime a series does something "completely new", they take a very major risk on losing the majority of game fans they have, and gaining only a minority that isn't large enough to bring in the revenue that the gaming company was looking for. Maybe the R.E. fans will like the retooling. But, if the past is any indicator, most of them will play for two minutes, decide they hate it, and this could turn into a bigger fiasco than Netflix wanting to raise their prices and split itself became.
