Nights are no longer scary

Resident Evil is one of the most popular horror survival franchises of games out there, largely due to the fact that it immerses players into a distinct experience that offers quite a lot of thrilling and scary moments.

Most of these terrifying moments are accentuated by the dark atmosphere provided by the nighttime setting. You always need to pay attention to the dark corners of streets or buildings because there is always something that might appear from these parts. The dim flashlight is your most trusted ally in these conditions and it could always help you prevent a pretty scary encounter with one of the zombies from the game.

But now it seems that the latest game in the franchise, the upcoming Resident Evil 5, will be different, as most of the action of the title will take place during the day. Jun Takeuchi, the producer of the game, and Yasuhiro Anpo, the director of this title, have recently talked about this new twist on the Resident Evil franchise with 1up. They went on saying that the daytime setting offered the development team new challenges in terms of recreating the same horror atmosphere.

"One of the reasons that we wanted to do it was to give ourselves a new challenge. We wanted to see if we could re-create the horror in the daytime, but one reason we set previous games at night was the limitations of the systems that we were working on at the time," said Takeuchi.

"Certainly one of the reasons was that when you're doing night, you don't have to worry about where the light is coming from. But when you're doing things in the daytime, it's very difficult to create the right balance between light and shadow. And you have to worry about all the effects in there as well, rather than just disguising things, as you were saying. So when we were designing the game on current-gen hardware...that let us do more scenes in the daytime, let us try something new. It was a new challenge and also something new that we could do in the process of developing the game – give us something new to do there." added Anpo.

Some very interesting statements that help shed some light on this pretty radical decision that the Capcom team made during the development of this game. Let's just hope that players will get the same horror experience as they did from other titles in the series.
