A few days ago, Twitter Security Engineer Charlie Miller and IOActive Director of Security Intelligence Chris Valasek demonstrated at the DEF CON 21 security convention that they could hack cars.

In an effort to encourage others to get involved in automotive security research, the experts have released a 101-page paper, captured data, and the tools they’ve utilized to hack a 2010 Ford Escape and a 2010 Toyota Prius.

“The paper is pretty refined but the tools are a snapshot of what we had,” the researchers noted.

“There are probably some things that are deprecated or do not work, but things like ECOMCat and ecomcat_api should really be all you need to start with your projects.”

The paper and the tools are available for download on IOActive’s website.
