Rescatux, a GNU/Linux rescue CD that is equipped with Rescapp, which is a nice wizard that will guide you through your rescue tasks, is now at version 0.32 Beta 1.

Rescatux can fix GRUB and GRUB2, check and fix filesystems (Windows MBR included), change GNU/Linux passwords, regenerate sudoers files, and much more.

Having a set of tools that can help you save your system from various problems is great, especially when those tools are packaged in a nice Debian-based Live distro. It may not look like much, but the point of this OS is not to look good, but to do a very specific job.

The developers said that adopting Qt for Rescatux is not actually a priority right now and that users should be more than happy with the LXDE desktop environment, which is using GTK+ 2.x.

“As I was not able to use RazorQT from unstable or testing Debian, and as LXQT was even more difficult I had to drop RazorQT and fallback to LXDE (which it’s currently based on GTK2). The long waited dream of an almost QT based rescue cd has been paused. That’s the reason why I had to change 0.31 to 0.32.”

“The other reason for 0.31 to 0.32 change is because I am dropping Super Grub2 Disk integration. I have been thinking about a Rescatux Plus edition that would include it but I’m not very sure of it. I would rather prefer to have only one Rescatux download and then, if you want to, you can build your USB with both Super Grub2 Disk and Rescatux in it,” said the developer.

According to the changelog, the networking detection has been improved, when users double-click on directories on the desktop the Iceweasel Internet browser is no longer opening instead of the file manager, Super Grub2 Disk is no longer included by default, the Rescapp UI has been redesigned, Rescapp scrolling has been added, and the option screen buttons have been rearranged to make it easier to read.

Also, RazorQT has been replaced by LXDE, WICD has been replaced by network-manager-gnome, and the distribution is no longer based on the Debian unstable (sid) branch.

A complete list of changes can be found in the official announcement. You can download Rescatux 0.32 Beta 1 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a Beta version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
