A new report launched by the market analysis firm Newzoo has shown that sales of used titles and of digitally distributed content make up 35 percent of the overall amount of money spent on video games in the United Stated.

23% of the money is linked to the second hand game market, which publishers and developers have sought to limit in the last few years, while 12 percent are linked to digital content.

In Europe the numbers are lower, with 20% going to the used game market and 9 percent linked to the digitally distributed games.

The biggest impact of the digital distribution revolution is on the PC, where Newzoo says that 58 percent of all money spent on gaming is linked to services like Steam and its rivals.

The new statistic from the market analysis firm might persuade the NPD Group to implement digital distribution tracking for its monthly sales reports, which have so far only focused on retail numbers.
