Rene Preval delivered his presidential oath in front of the Senate and the Congress on
Sunday following his winning of the second presidential mandate.

Speaking in his native Creole and holding his hand on the Haitian constitution, Preval pledged allegiance and respect to the basic set of Haitian laws and promised the preservation of the national sovereignty.

Joseph Lambert, the president of the electoral chamber, stated that Haiti is witnessing a special moment, since the re-election of Preval represents a triumph for democracy and for the preservation of human rights and state of law.

During the ceremony, national police and United Nations peace keeping forces monitored the streets for potential riots and violent uprisings, as supporters for former Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide, who was forced to resign following a bloody revolt in 2004, protested for his return to power.

Preval is going to replace a temporary government set up by the United Nations after Aristide was removed of office. The 63-year-old economist the poor Haitian population majority elected, who also ran the affairs of the state from 1996 to 2001, won the February presidential election by a 51.15 margin.

He founded the Lespwa (Hope) Party, although he initially started his political activity within the Lavals (Avalanche) Party of former president Aristide. His key campaign note was the promise of national peace he brought forward.
