14 DAY TRIAL // As the week draws to a close, Mac users who didn’t get a chance to check their software updaters will be greeted by a couple of new releases from Apple that address known issues in the latest iterations of OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion.
Released to the masses this week, the “supplemental” OS X Lion 10.7.5 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 are two important updates from Cupertino that resolve problems with core system components and processes, such as Time Machine backups, Safari, parental controls, and more.
OS X Lion 10.7.5 Supplemental Update, “recommended for all users running OS X Lion v10.7.5,” patches an issue that may cause Time Machine backups to a tad too long to complete, as well as a bug that prevents certain applications signed with a Developer ID from firing up.
If you installed the Mac OS X Lion v10.7.5 Update (build 11G56), Apple says the Supplemental Update is recommended. Check your build by navigating with your mouse pointer to the Apple menu, then click "About This Mac" and hit the “More Info” button.
OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Supplemental Update is equally recommended to customers running the latest-selling version of Apple’s Mac OS. It goes on top of the original OS X 10.8.2 update issued last month.
It allows Safari to access secure sites when parental controls are enabled, resolves an issue that may cause certain Japanese characters to appear incorrectly in Mail, and plugs a hole that prevented systems with more than 64 GB of RAM from booting up.
It also patches a bug that caused the DVD Player application to quit unexpectedly.
One thing Apple also made clear this week is that, in addition to these fixes, the supplemental updates include the dozens of security patches originally included in OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2, OS X Lion v10.7.5 and Security Update 2012-004.
The link provided by Apple to the Support area of its web site where security advisories are posted is a bit too general, which could result in some customers not accessing the right documentation. The knowledge base article that includes the security content can be found right here.
