Video game developer Relic is putting the finishing touches on Company of Heroes 2 and fans already want to know whether the next project for the company is a new Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War title.

Quinn Duffy, a game director working at Relic, tells Eurogamer that his own team is still unsure about the status of the Warhammer 40,000 license, which belongs to Games Workshop.

Relic has recently been bought by SEGA after its previous publisher, THQ, has declared bankruptcy.

The developer states, “There were certain properties that were attached to the sale of Relic initially, which was Company of Heroes, but not all of Relic's initial IP was part of that initial sale package.”

Warhammer 40,000 has recently been licensed to Slitherine for a new turn-based strategy title and Full Control is using the same universe to create a Space Hulk experience.

The fantasy component of the same universe is also licensed by SEGA, with The Creative Assembly creating a game around it, although no official details have been offered for it.

Duffy adds, “they have the opportunity to work that license with whoever they want. I would hope it would be us again. We had a great working relationship with Games Workshop. Sega is establishing one now with the fantasy license for Creative Assembly.”

While unsure, the developer believes that there’s a strong possibility that Relic and Games Workshop will work together again.

Recently, Relic has also suggested that it will work with The Creative Assembly to share technology and ideas.

Relic is well known for its real-time strategy expertise and for the way it has reshaped the genre.

At the moment, Company of Heroes 2 is in close beta stage, available for all those who have pre-ordered, and the game will be offered on the PC on June 25.
