Reese Witherspoon is such a charmer - but sometimes, she seems to be taking a leaf out of Jessica Alba's book and is quite keen on talking nonsense. Luckily, we all still love her, she hasn't lost the "cuteness" factor and won't be starting a musical career anytime soon - so we have all the reasons in the world to express nothing but deep sympathy for her. And the occasionally ironic attitude - you know I can't help myself on that front, so just humor me. And actually, I'd like to see you keep a straight face when confronted with such ridiculous statements as the one Reese slipped while on Good Morning America, in which she said that she wants her kids bullied in school because she thinks it's character building.
That's what immediately made me think of Jessica Alba. Quick, someone, check - have they been hanging out lately? That seems unlikely - but still, wasn't Alba the one who said a few weeks ago that she'd like her kid to be a nerd? Well,
Reese pretty much wants the same thing - only with a little bit of bullying added in for flavor. "I've had movies that were stinkeroos!" she said. "And then, you know, I think everybody has experience of being awkward. I was always really short and really underdeveloped and had big coke-bottle glasses... I think, that's where I got a personality from, though, man. I wouldn't give any of it back - not for a day. I wouldn't want my children to miss out on any of that teasing and bullying and don't you think it kind of makes you who you are?" she asked.
As a matter of fact, I don't - and I don't really think Reese is painting a realistic picture of what bullying means these days and of how much damage it can do to a child. I personally doubt Reese's kids would be bullied - they look pretty cute to me and having a celebrity mommy does help. I know that what doesn't kill you is supposed to make you stronger, but in the end, just how strong do you want your kids to have to be? If she's OK with bullying, why stop there? Better make them even more interesting and poke a stick in their eyes - imagine just how strong they'll have to be then. I think that Reese really is taking an unrealistic view of things, or maybe she just made one dumb remark. Better make sure it doesn't happen again though - otherwise she'll end up being put on the same shelf as Jessica Alba, and that's really not a compliment.
