I always thought Reese Witherspoon was one of the calm, nice and cute presences out there, a lady who's not crazy for the spotlight and is still one of the (if not the) best paid Hollywood actresses. That's why I was very surprised to see her divorce Ryan Philippe, and even more surprised when she hooked up with Jake Gyllenhaal. I mean, don't get me wrong - I totally think Jake is a complete knockout and all, but it all happened so fast we really didn't have time to figure it all out.
And then came the rumors that Reese's romance with Gyllenhaal was all part of a big show the two actors were putting on in order to raise the profile of "Rendition", a movie in which they co-starred and that - as we all ever so fondly remember - was a box office flop. But it seems it was all for real - so real in fact that now Reese and Jake seem to be doing so well together that they've managed to annoy Ryan Phillippe and cause him to rage out at his ex wife and demand that Reese's new beau spend less time with his kids.
Reese and Ryan have two kids, Deacon, three and Ava, eight. The problem is, it seems that Deacon for once loves Gyllenhaal so much that whenever he meets his father he goes on and on about him. "It's Jake did this, Jake brought mommy flowers and coffee, Jake says we should recycle" a family friend stated to OK. "Ryan called Reese and suggested she stop letting him (Jake) spend so much time with the kids. He was pretty irate on the phone. Reese barely let him finish the sentence before she shot back that what she does with her personal life is her business".
Yes, well, it must suck to see your kids fascinated by some other man than him, but on the other hand, I think he should have considered all this before he decided to cheat on his wife. OK, that was mean - but true. In the end, there's nothing to be done in such cases except - well, learn to live with it, which is probably not very easy, since the custody agreement suggests that Ava and Deacon spend equal time with both parents - and their current partners, of course.
I really hope this doesn't turn ugly. There are plenty of custody battles raging out there, and it's all ugly and unsettling. Custody battles usually bring out the worst in people, and I think Reese and even her ex husband are too cute for such an ugly thing. OK, maybe that's not a very solid and valid reason, but nevertheless, it's better to read about Reese hating Vince Vaughn's a*s rather than Reese arguing with her ex about who gets to take the kids where and when. What do you think?
