The code-savvy bunch at iPhone-Dev have announced the release of a Windows-compatible redsn0w 0.9.8b1 capable of jailbreaking iOS 5 beta IPSWs.

Confirmed on the Dev Team blog and Twitter by team member Musclenerd, the Windows redsn0w is also aimed at developers, just like the Mac version.

“Windows redsn0w iOS5 jailbreak released […] -- devs ONLY....PLEASE don't pirate Apple software!”, Musclenerd wrote on Twitter. He directs followers to his group’s latest blog post which now features an update.

The Team notes that, “Since Apple now provides Windows iTunes 10.5 for iOS5 and iCloud developers, it’s no longer the case that only Mac owners can legitimately activate their devices.”

“We now provide a Windows version of redsn0w for those developers (only!),” reads the announcement.

Download links are provided for redsn0w 0.9.8b1 for Mac and redsn0w 0.9.8b1 for Windows.

Those who plan to employ these tools should read through the entire documentation regarding this release.

For example, users must note that redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 1 can only provide what is referred to as a ‘tethered’ jailbreak, meaning that each time the device is powered off, the user will only be able to return to jailbroken state by connecting it to the computer used to jailbreak.

“THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost,” the Team said last week.

Users are told to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now.” The hack installs Cydia and other nifty things.

The Dev crew notes that “If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.”

Developers looking to jailbreak future iOS 5 betas are being told to hold on to the current iOS 5.0b1 IPSW as they will most likely need to point redsn0w to this firmware in order to jailbreak the next.

“The way redsn0w works, you will very likely be able to use this on upcoming iOS5 betas, just by continuing to point redsn0w at the 5.0b1 IPSW. So keep that IPSW handy!”, the team writes.
