Congress is requesting a change in the name of the Washington Redskins, as several organizations are asking for the R-word to be dropped.

"Native Americans throughout the country consider the 'R-word' a racial, derogatory slur akin to the 'N-word' among African Americans or the 'W-word' among Latinos," a document sent to owner Dan Snyder reads.

According to the LA Times, Snyder has so far refused to budge on the matter. Earlier this months, he was prompted by D.C. Councilman David Grosso to make said change, giving the NFL team the Redtails title.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the team's sponsor, FedEx and 31 NFL franchises received the same statement, signed by 10 members of Congress.

The use of the insulting wording allegedly affects young Native Americans, shaping their view in themselves and their heritage.
