Coming in early June

THQ, as the publisher, and Volition, as the developer, are announcing that they plan to launch Red Faction: Guerrilla on June 9. The videogame is set to arrive on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC. Volition only recently confirmed the date but retailers have been listing it for some time. It also seems that the demo of the game will come to both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network on April 23, which is quite some time before the official release date.

Volition and THQ have created two other Red Faction games, both of them for the PlayStation 2. They were first person shooters that featured quite a lot of destructible environments, some of them very well integrated into gameplay. Red Faction: Guerrilla is set to up the level of the destruction that the player can create while changing the perspective to a third person one.

Volition has also eliminated the corridor aspect of the shooter, taking the open world idea already present in its Saints Row series and moving it to Red Faction and Mars. The player will have missions that need to be completed, but he/she will be able to choose how and when to take them on. There will be game areas featuring sets of missions. Some of them are integral to the story and cannot be skipped, but others are side quests that provide more of the in game currency or create more support for you within the miner population.

Red Faction: Guerrilla will not be anything like Saints Row 2. The humor and madness of the game set in Stillwater are gone. Mars is gritty and very, very red, with miners rebelling against the oppressive rule of the Earth Defense Forces. The player joins the rebellion and will do most of the heavy lifting in the fight for freedom. And now that Volition has completed this game, let's hope that it moves onto making Descent Freespace 3.
