The development team at the San Diego studio of Rockstar, best known for creating the Western-themed Red Dead Redemption, have posted a number of job ads which suggest that they are putting together a team to work on a new open-world game.

Three new job advertisements at Gamasutra are linked to programmers who will work on gameplay, game tools and network elements and two of them are specifically talking about an open-world project.

Since it was acquired by Rockstar in 2003 the company has only worked on two intellectual properties, Midnight Club and Red Dead, and it’s likely that one of them is currently used for its new game project.

Red Dead Redemption, which was launched during 2010 on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, has been very well received by both critics and gamers and praised for both its mechanics and the size of the Western world that it created.

Rumors that a sequel is in development have appeared during 2011, but Rockstar has not made any sort of official announcement of a new title in the series which also includes Red Dead Revolver.

A new game might explore the faith of John Marston’s son, who at the end of Red Dead Redemption takes law into his own hands.

Of course, there is always the possibility that Rockstar San Diego is working on an entirely new open world game that might be launched during 2013, after the company puts out Grand Theft Auto V.

GTA V has been officially announced via a trailer, but the development team at Rockstar has not offered a clear launch date, although the game is expected to arrive before the end of 2012.

The action returns to a fictionalized version of Los Angeles, but the team working on the franchise has not offered any real information about the plot or the characters.
