Many of them allow players to attack innocent civilians

The International Red Cross says that games that are inspired by real-world events should also include the legal frame linked to conflict and punishments for players or characters who break them in any way.

Francois Senechaud, a leader of the organization, is quoted by Gamasutra as saying that, “Video games that are representing battlefields... are very close to reality.

He adds, “We are arguing that we have to get even closer to reality and we also have to include the rules of... conflict.”

Plenty of first-person shooters allow their players to shoot civilians or even encourage them to do so at certain points.

But no high-profile titles have so far included options that show the impact of those actions or the way the international legal framework allows them to be prosecuted.

It is highly unlikely that mainstream series like Battlefield or Call of Duty will ever deliver a realistic portrayal for warfare.
