Artists make old rusty hub caps tell another story, after turning them into works of art

Landfillart is an international project aiming to highlight the talent and efforts of 1,041 gifted artists that have what it takes to turn rusted metal waste represented by lo-longer-needed hubcaps into fine works of art.

All the material gathered, recycled and marvelously reused comes from old automobiles manufactured until the 1970's. They have all been converted into original “metal canvases” by environmentally-friendly artists who are aware of the fact that recycled items are a cost-effective resource that can be combined with the right amount of skills and creativity to attract the interest of a large segment of followers.

While some of them used traditional acrylic paint or oil, others took the entire process to a whole new level, transforming old rusty hubcaps into amazing sculptures.

If the Egyptians used the pyramid walls so tell a story and the Indians used animals skins as their canvas, there is no reason why talented eco-artists wouldn't fully exploit the potential of a common metal disk. This project is quite new, but its developer hopes to complete it by 2012.

Until next year, the gallery owner wants to be able to showcase “forty-one pieces of great art.” The gallery has already succeeded in purchasing one thousand additional old hubcaps that await to be cleaned and transformed.

“As an advocate for the three R's-reduce, reuse, recycle- Landfillart was a perfect opportunity for me to be artistically creative,” states Missi Allie, one on the artists involved in this eco-conscious project.

After completing this phase, the owner is still keen on finding other one thousand artists eager to tell a different story using the same kind of material. All in all, the final phase of the project will reveal the most amazing 200 metal canvases to the public, in an attempt to raise the popularity of such eco-friendly initiatives through a book and a traveling show.

The most awesome-looking masterpieces will represent the entire project, making the public opinion re-think the highly underestimated concept of “landfillart.”
