This past Friday, folks with hunters organization Safari Club International finally got around to measuring a ginormous alligator caught and killed in Alabama, US, earlier this month, on August 16.

The reptile, a picture of which is available next to this article, was found to tip the scale at a little over 1,000 pounds (453.5 kilograms), and to measure an impressive 15 feet and 9 inches (4.9 meters) from head to tail.

According to The Seattle Times, these figures make the beast the largest alligator to have until now been measured by Safari Club International. The reptile is also the largest of its kind to have until now been killed in Alabama, US.

The reptile was caught and shot dead by a family in Alabama, who claims to have spent about 5 hours battling it before finally managing to kill it. The Stokes say they found the alligator in a creek not far from the city of Montgomery.

As detailed in a post on the official Facebook page for the Roland Cooper State Park-Alabama, the reptile was harvested during an alligator hunting season.

Such hunts are carried out on a regular basis to help maintain a healthy alligator population in the area, the folks behind Roland Cooper State Park-Alabama go on to explain.
