Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has a great beginning

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has just been released by developers 38 Studios and Big Huge Games, with the help of publisher Electronic Arts.

The game’s opening segments are already well known by plenty of players, however, as they were part of the free demo that appeared for the title across the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

While it may not have been to everyone’s liking, it’s worth pointing out that making a full-fledged tutorial for a massive role playing game like Reckoning is a great achievement for a developer, because many studios fail to get across the sheer scope of such an experience.

For those who didn’t get to experience it yet, the game takes you, in around 15 minutes or so, through the three major play styles that a gamer can adopt in Reckoning. You start off by killing enemies with a sword, then get to use some daggers and eliminate them in a stealthy manner, and then use magic attacks against some nasty spiders.

Considering one of Reckoning’s major selling points is that the player can adopt any play the style he or she wants, this tutorial does a great job of highlighting in a short time the variety of ways they can choose to tackle the RPG.

Sure, after getting to play it some more you find out that each of these “classes” is much more complicated, using other sets of weapons for close or long range combat, but at least at the beginning, you’re given a distilled experience that’s quite impressive.

At the end of the fighting section you get to choose a set of proper weapons and armor, either for a warrior, rogue, or mage, but you can easily go for any sort of combination once you start doing quests and uncovering the world of Amalur.

We’ll talk about that, however, in a future gamer diary for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Until then, you can get the game on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 today, in North America, and on February 10, in Europe.
