Officials from within the Iranian Oil Ministry claim to have discovered the true reasons for which their systems have recently been targeted by hackers.

According to Fars News, Deputy Oil Minister Hamdollah Mohammadnejad has revealed that the nature of the attack and the identity of the hackers have been discovered, but he couldn’t provide any details due to the pending investigation.

While initial reports had stated that the attack might have been an attempt to disrupt the ministry’s networks, the fact that a computer virus was involved has lead the organization’s representatives to believe that the hackers actually wanted to steal and destroy information.

“Thanks God, at the time being the computer systems are running with a high level of safety and users are working normally,” Mohammadnejad said.

The Oil Ministry feels confident that it can protect its infrastructures against future attacks, but as a precaution, data has been backed up.
