The Houston Zoo has recently announced the birth of a baby Pygmy marmoset. The monkey is incredibly tiny, and weighs merely 36 grams (0.8 pounds).

It was born on July 27 to parents Oko and Per. The two have been living at the Houston Zoo for quite a while now, and have four other offspring: three “sons” and one “daughter.” Zoo Borns tells us that, for the time being, the baby monkey's parents, its brothers and its sister are taking turns looking after it.

Since they are all very protective of the new addition to their family, zoo employees haven't yet had the chance to carefully examine the baby Pygmy marmoset and determine whether it is a boy or a girl.

Apparently, Pygmy marmosets are the world's smallest monkeys.

They live in South America's Amazon Basin, and presently risk going extinct due to the fact that humans are hunting them and destroying their natural habitats.
