Sean Evans of Complex has newfound respect for The Rock

They don’t call him The Rock for no reason: the former wrestler, now one of the most successful stars in film, Dwayne Johnson, also happens to be one huge, muscular dude. He trains a lot and he works very hard on movie sets, so his diet is customized to keep him in top shape.

It consists of 7 full meals spaced out through the day, which amount to a whopping 5,200 calories and almost 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of food. If you ever wondered if a regular guy could ever stick to this diet for at least a day, one editor from Complex magazine set out to find the answer to that question.

It is not in the affirmative.

Regular guy tries The Rock’s diet, fails

Meet Sean Evans: he is smaller than The Rock and clearly not in the same admirable physical shape. As per his own admission, he isn’t that much of a fan of healthy eating either, saying in the video documenting his (failed) attempt that his diet mainly consists of Chipotle and bong smoke.

Still, Evans wanted to see if he could eat and train like The Rock for one single day, and thus get a better appreciation of the kind of commitment he was capable of to have his famous body.

As you can see in the video below (*please note that some discretion is recommended when viewing it because it contains graphic language that might offend), he started the day knowing that it would be difficult, but determined to stick to the plan until the end.

What made the challenge even more difficult was the fact that Evans hated fish, and almost all of The Rock’s meals included it. Still, he was determined to make it until the very end.

He didn’t. He ended up puking one of the meals and tossing another in the garbage bin. Even though he made sure he kept active throughout the day, the amount of exercise he got wasn’t enough to burn all those calories and make him require more nourishment.

In the end, Sean Evans had to admit defeat.

Newfound respect for The Rock

Still, the experience was more than enough to make him understand the kind of commitment The Rock was capable of to be in the best shape possible.

He may no longer be a pro wrestler, but the 43-year-old actor still eats and trains like an athlete. He also gets up in the dead of night to get his workouts out of the way, goes to work and then trains some more, so no wonder he needs this kind of diet to stay in shape.

“I respect The Rock,” Sean Evans says. “What if you had the money that he has and the success that he has, right? Like, would you be waking up at four o'clock in the morning and just shredding legs and just eating this meathead food around the clock, every two hours? Respect the hell out of it, man. Respect the hell out of Dwayne Johnson.”

As you can see, The Rock saw Evans’ failed attempt at sticking to his diet, and tweeted that he would have had more success if he’d worked 14-hour days on a movie set instead of getting some work at the desk, behind the computer.

There is always a next time, Sean Evans.
