Music subscription service Rdio has released an updated iOS client with push notifications support, allowing the app to alert you about people sharing music with you, new followers, and new subscribers to playlists that you’ve created. The update also includes aesthetic improvements.

A rival of Pandora, Spotify, and Apple’s own iTunes Radio, Rdio is touted as a social jukebox with over 20 million tracks on file ready to be played by anyone. You can use it for free for two weeks without restrictions just to try it out, and customers can then opt to pay for unlimited listening everywhere with a monthly subscription for 14.99 USD (US) / 14.99 CAD (CA) / 14.99 GBP (GB) / 20.99 AUD (AU) / 19.99 NZD (NZ) / 14,99 EUR.

“Discover your next favorite track with Rdio, a social jukebox with over 20 million tracks to play — instantly or in stations — on your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Play what you want, when you want, from new hits to classic albums,” says the developer.

Users can start their own station based on any track, artist or genre, add the songs to their Collection or make a playlist and even download the tunes for offline listening (for premium users).

Version 2.5.9 is out today with Push Notifications. According to the company, you can “Get notified on your mobile device about the activities of your choice, such as music shared with you, new followers, subscribers to your playlists and more.” Push notifications can be turned off in the device settings.

Rdio notes that version 2.5.9 further includes user interface improvements and minor bug fixes. The app’s interface is localized in English, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, and Traditional Chinese.

To download Rdio, customers need an iDevice that can handle iOS 6.0, such as iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPad second generation, iPad third generation, iPad fourth generation, iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, iPod touch fourth generation, and iPod touch fifth generation.

Unlike other music streaming services, Rdio allows users to follow friends, artists and music lovers in general to see their tastes in music and get inspired. This facilitates music discovery, meaning that the more people you follow, the bigger the chances are of you getting to the music you love the most.

Apple itself entered the music streaming scene with iTunes Radio last year, and this week it bolstered this side of its business with the costly acquisition of Beats Music and Beats Electronics.
