“Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II” wins Worst Picture at the 2013 Razzies

The Oscars 2013 have just ended but, while the elite of the film industry is out celebrating and congratulating the winners, there’s another ceremony that took place this weekend – and of which its “winners” are not likely to want to talk about in public: the Razzies 2013.

Also known as the Raspberry Awards, the Razzies ceremony is the opposite of the Oscars, for which reason it precedes them.

The idea is to offer the public a counterpoint for the Oscars, which honor excellence in cinematography. As the Oscars, the Razzies don’t take into account box office gross, even if some of the winners awarded here have had spectacular sales worldwide.

This is the case for the 2013 winner of Worst Picture, the final chapter in “The Twilight Saga,” “Breaking Dawn Part II,” which is just one installment of the 5-part insanely successful (and highly profitable) film franchise.

Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella Cullen (nee Swan) in “Twilight” also won Worst Actress, though she was nominated for her performance in “Snow White and the Huntsman” as well, for the same category.

Worst actor didn’t go to her co-star in “Twilight,” Robert Pattinson, even though he too was nominated, but to Adam Sandler for “That’s My Boy.”

One might as well note that, these past years, Sandler has become a real Razzie favorite and that’s nothing to boast about.

Speaking of box office success and the quality of some movies, Razzies founder John Wilson elaborates on his own theory.

“I have a pet theory, which is that the box office on ‘Twilight’ films is very impressive, but my theory is that instead of 40 million individual girls going to see it, it's 8 million girls going to see it five times each. People who love those movies just adore them,” he says.

“I believe the attitude of people who really love ‘Twilight’ movies toward this subject is very similar to the pomposity with which the Academy Awards addresses the whole rest of the world. Our whole existence is all about making fun of pompous, so ‘Twilight’ really is right up our alley,” Wilson adds.

Below is the complete list of winners (“winners,” more likely) at the 2013 Razzie Awards. Check it out.
