The blue mini PC is packed in a blue case but doesn't feel blue at all

Feeling blue has, for a long time, been a way of saying someone is out of sorts, sad, moody, broody, or any synonym of that, but the term definitely doesn't evoke that feeling in this particular instance.

That it is a particularly bright but not eye-hurting shade of blue is one reason. That the Raspberry Pi Foundation has no reason to feel blue right now is another.

In fact, the foundation has a reason to celebrate, as its Raspberry Pi credit card-sized PC has now reached the ripe age of one.

Indeed, the small system is celebrating its first birthday, so its makers have unveiled a new version of it, with a blue PCB (printed circuit board) and box.

More specifically, it is a limited edition of the Model B, the one launched back in October 2012 and which also happens to be the strongest version yet.

Sadly, no one will be able to get their hands on it, unless they are part of “charitable causes involving kids and education,” and even then it's not a guarantee.

Indeed, the company isn't selling these things. It is donating them to various, as we said, causes. There will be only 1,000 of them made.

“To celebrate our first anniversary, RS Components, one of our two main manufacturing distributors, are releasing a limited edition of 1000 blue Raspberry Pis,” said Liz on the foundation's blog.

“These Pis are very cute: there’s something really handsome about that blue. They come with a certificate of authenticity signed by Eben and a matching blue case from One Nine Design in Wales; and blue, as drinkers of Slush Puppy should be aware, is the canonical color of raspberry flavoring.”

For those in need of a short history of the Pi, the small gadget was revealed in early January 2012 and was supposed to be an ARM-based platform for students who want to learn programming and hardware building.

It got a lot more media attention than anyone thought though, because it happened to be a good way of turning TVs into Smart TV.
