It's been over 60 years since a North Pacific right whale was last spotted in these waters

North Pacific right whales are now an endangered species. Conservationists estimate that only a few hundred such marine mammals are left to inhabit our oceans.

Hence the fact that, when a North Pacific right whale saw fit to swim by British Columbia, near Haisa Gwaii, greenheads and whale lovers alike were pretty much besides themselves with joy.

Sources say that their enthusiasm was largely due to the fact that it's been over 60 years since a marine mammal belonging to this species was last seen hanging about in these waters.

“This is a very exciting discovery. Our research group has conducted over 50,000 kilometres of whale surveys off the B.C. coast over the past 10 years and have sighted thousands of whales, but this is the first North Pacific right whale,” biologists John Ford said in a statement.

“It was wonderful to see it and to confirm that the species still exists in Canadian waters,” he added.
