Celestron's Nightscape 8300 may have been formally released back in September, but only now has it begun to ship, for the price of $1,419.00 / 1,149-1419 Euro.

That price is actually low for a camera that can capture photos of the night sky.

Regular point-and-shoot cameras don't usually manage to snap anything clearer than total black, with one or two white dots if owners get especially lucky.

Shooting clear photos of star-studded nights needs specialized glass, as well as very specific image sensors.

Celestron Nightscape 8300 gets a 22.5mm diagonal CCD chip (8.3 megapixel resolution). It is called KAF-8300 CCD and is actually quite famous on the galaxy-shooting camera market.

The specs are here and the gallery below has a product photo as well as some sample images.
