Recent news informs us that the official mascot for the upcoming FIFA 2014 World Cup is to be an endangered species of armadillo.

Although it may be true that sporting competitions and species conservation rarely happen to have something in common, it seems to us that choosing this rare mammal to mark this football event stand to yield some benefits as far as safeguarding biodiversity is concerned.

In fact, the only reason why this armadillo was chosen as mascot for the FIFA 2014 World Cup is because a green-oriented organization asked that these animals are also brought under the spotlight so as to help raise awareness about how much they need help if they are to not become extinct.

As sources report, this rare animal animal species is known to science as the Tolypeutes tricinctus, and it is native to Brazilian regions.

An Internet poll is expected to soon decide how the mascot will be named.
