RapidMind and Rogue Wave, two companies that develop software solutions targeting both the GPU and CPU for general purpose programming acceleration, have revealed collaboration with AMD, mainly for parallel computing to bring performance improvements in financial algorithms.

RapidMind Inc., the most known of the two, has recently announced support for AMD FireStream 9170 and ATI Radeon HD 3870 on its RapidMind Multi-Core Development Platform. Using RapidMind and AMD's products enables developers to gain performance boost for their applications. Financial algorithms have experienced a colossal improvement: 27 times more performance.

"With the FireStream 9170, AMD has raised the bar for accelerators, and RapidMind is uniquely suited to companies looking to leverage this performance," said Ray DePaul, president and CEO of RapidMind. "To remain competitive, software organizations must continue to adopt the latest technology. With RapidMind, they can build applications to run on today?s fastest processors, knowing their software will automatically leverage the hardware innovations of tomorrow."

"AMD Stream embraces an open-systems approach to the GPU and is pleased to be working with RapidMind as we grow our ecosystem of software and service provider partners," said Patricia Harrell, Director of AMD Stream Computing. "RapidMind?s Multi-Core Development Platform gives our customers a unique advantage for harnessing the compute capacity of the AMD FireStream 9170 as well as multi-core CPUs."

The RapidMind platform is used by high performance computing developers for the creation of single-treated applications that can take advantage of the full potential of multi-core processors and of the application acceleration available for GPUs. The development of parallel applications is significantly simplified through the RapidMind software platform.

The second company that has announced an AMD collaboration, Rogue Wave Software, Inc, a supplier of C++ components for high-performance computing, will also work on enhancing the performance of certain financial applications.

GPUs offer significant performance increase for parallel applications in financial services area

The financial services industry is trying to have its computing performance increased so that higher business volumes and more users could be supported, more transactions processed and, of course, more speed featured. The latest developments in computer hardware, mainly in the graphics processing units, have opened a door for the creation of new applications, especially in the financial algorithmic area, that can benefit from the significant performance increase offered by multi-core CPUs and specialized GPUs.

The challenge faced by developers at this moment is writing codes that can be easily used with any GPU and with multi-core processors at the same time. Most existing codes do not use the performance potential of the GPU, so this obstacle must be surpassed to obtain accelerated applications.

"The future of parallel computing depends on two key elements. First, can your new and existing applications tap performance improvements without rewriting the code? Second, can they do it across multi-core CPUs, GPUs and other future specialized hardware? If enterprises cannot do both, parallel computing efforts won't deliver on their promise," said Tom Gaunt, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Rogue Wave. "This collaboration is an important step in not just researching, but delivering solutions that address these challenges and further the cause of parallel computing."

"AMD recognizes that offering users ways to develop applications that migrate easily between multi-core CPUs, GPUs and future architectures is essential in enabling the productivity of our customers and the longevity of their applications," said Patricia Harrell. "We are pleased that our relationship with Rogue Wave will enable us to work towards providing an important cross-platform programming solution, while at the same time, growing our valuable technology partner ecosystem."

In order to prove these newly created partnerships, both RapidMind and Rogue Wave will be present at the AMD booth 2000 at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Technology Management Conference and Exhibit in New York City, June 10-12.
