No more endless enemies and cheap scares

id Software is one of the most respected video game developers out there, specializing in high-end shooters like Wolfenstein and Quake or Doom, all of which were characterized by hardcore gaming mechanics and various other tricks of that genre.

One infamous trick in the design of many titles from id Software were the 'monster closets', which gave gamers quite a lot of scares in Doom 3 for example. It was usually a prescripted sequence when the player would venture forward and at a specific moment an enemy would pop out, seemingly out of nowhere, and the gamer would have to kill him in order to pass.

In the upcoming id title Rage, monster closets and cheap thrills will be a thing of the past, at least according to the lead designer of the game, Matt Hooper, who talked a bit about the game recently. He revealed that cheap tricks such as those closets were a thing of the past and the game would have its own environment in which the NPCs were living their own lives.

“In Rage when you're going to the RC-Bomb base from the demo to deal with the Shrouded clan they're doing whatever they're supposed to be doing,” Hooper said. “If they're supposed to be defending against you coming there, they'll be doing that. If they're just tinkering or having a conversation they'll do that. You will never see a monster closet.”

Rage is one of the most interesting games coming from id and it will be published by EA in 2010. The game is set in a post apocalyptic setting and combines both shooter mechanics as well as racing game elements. It will be based on id's Tech 5 engine and will definitely impress in terms of graphics and effects.
