After more than a year since the release of the original Rage title, Bethesda and id Software have confirmed that an expansion is coming, in the form of the oft-rumored and long awaited Rage: The Scorchers DLC.

Rage came out at the end of last year and was supposed to herald the comeback of developer id Software by combining top-notch shooter mechanics with racing gameplay all set in a post-apocalyptic environment.

Sadly, that wasn't so, as the game was filled with glitches across the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms, so id Software had to work hard in order to even attract some people to the game.

Now, after a lot of rumors and plenty of teasing throughout the year, Bethesda and id Software have confirmed that the first downloadable add-on for Rage is coming next week, in the form of The Scorchers.

Quite a few new things are included in the expansions, from six fresh areas to items and achievements and a new enemy faction called The Scorchers, as well as the possibility of playing past the original ending of the game.

"In this brand-new adventure spanning six all-new areas, you will fight alongside new allies to defend the Hager Settlement from a maniacal bandit clan known as The Scorchers. Along the way, you’ll participate in a new season of Mutant Bash TV, encounter new mini-games, and wield the overpowering and brutal Nailgun," the companies said on the Bethblog.

"In addition to the new content, this DLC includes Ultra-Nightmare, a new high difficulty mode, as well as an Extended Play option that allows you to play past the original ending of the game – giving you the opportunity to finish collecting items and achievements."

Rage: The Scorchers is out on December 18 worldwide for the PC and Xbox 360, as well as for the PS3 in North America. PS3 owners in Europe need to wait until December 19 to get it. The add-on costs €4.99/$4.99/400 MS Points.
